Careful Planning for Safe Partying

Besides the risk of being caught for drink driving, and clocking up the calories, the drunken faux pas is one of the reasons why parties seem to be more sedate these days than they were a decade ago.

Almost everyone has an embarrassing story to tell. A 2001 survey by TMP Worldwide found that a quarter of us have suffered an embarrassing moment at an office Christmas party and 15 per cent have kissed someone and regretted it later.

So if you’re planning to offer some good old fashioned Aussie hospitality this festive season, you and your guests will have a better time if you plan ahead and create a drinking environment that is welcoming and safe.

Here are some useful tips that will help you prepare for a safe party:

  • Encourage guests to avoid driving to the venue.
  • Provide plenty of food and have it available throughout the event.
  • Ensure low and non-alcoholic drinks are available. Put jugs of water and soft drinks on tables to encourage guests to alternate their drinks.
  • Plan party activities that don’t involve drinking as the main focus.
  • Keep an eye on your guests, particularly inexperienced drinkers.
  • Keep a clear head by staying in control of your own drinking.
